How Should Suit Trousers Fit? A Tailor's Guide

The Importance of Tailoring Trousers

Tailoring trousers is necessary to create a good fit. Our trousers come unfinished and must therefore be hemmed at your preferred length. There is 5cm of extra fabric through the whole leg to allow for the trousers to be widened if necessary.

Please note that Robin wears a size 50.

Ideal Trouser Length

We recommend the trousers to just touch the top of the shoes, we do not want ankles on full display, but do not want too much bunching of fabric either. Slightly touching the shoes allows for a nice clean shape and drape for the trousers.

Cuffs or No Cuffs

When thinking of having the trousers hemmed with or without a cuff is firstly a matter of personal opinion, however certain tips are also smart to remember.
Trousers with cuffs usually help keep a straight crease, especially on pleated trousers as the added weight in the bottom helps with the trousers keeping their shape. Trousers without cuffs are often perceived as more neutral and contemporary.
Cuff or no cuff is more of a style option rather than the fit.

Waist Fit and Adjustments

The waist of the trousers should fit without being restricting or uncomfortable when sitting. It should be tight enough to keep the trousers in place and using the side adjusters are a good way of keeping the trousers in place.
The waist has 5cm extra fabric in case they are a bit too tight, waistband can be tightened or let out by a tailor if necessary.

Seat Fit and Comfort

The seat should also not be too tight as this can cause restriction in movement but will also cause the fabric to be worn out quicker. Enough space is necessary to allow for drape and for movement.
There is 5cm extra fabric in the seat to allow for alterations.

Trouser Width and Shape

The width of the trousers is important for the drape and shape of the trousers. There should be sufficient fabric for the trousers to fall unrestricted, but there should not be a baggy fit to the trousers, tailored garments need a certain shape to be balanced.
Our trousers are cut with a taper to the bottom of the trousers. There is 5cm of extra fabric through the whole leg to allow for the trousers to be widened if necessary.
